Parent Visas. Who Is Eligible for These Visas?

Overseas parents who have at least half of their children residing in Australia as Australian citizens or permanent residents can apply for a parent visa. This allows parents to join the majority of their children in Australia and grants them permanent resident status, allowing them to reside in Australia indefinitely while also receiving access to Medicare.

Various categories of parent visas are available, including:

  • Parent visa (subclass 103)
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884)
  • Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864)
  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)
  • Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143)
  • Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)

Application Requirements

The primary requirement for parent visas is passing the “Balance of Family Test.” This test necessitates that at least half of your children live in Australia as Australian citizens or permanent residents. The table below illustrates the test further:

Application Process

Parent visa applications must be submitted by post or courier to the Department of Home Affairs office in Perth.

Additional Information:

During the application process, you will be required to provide your children’s birth certificates and documentation confirming their places of residence.

The waiting times for parent visas vary depending on the specific category applied for. For instance, Contributory Parent visas may have a waiting period of up to 2 years, while non-Contributory Parent visas can have significantly longer wait times, sometimes up to 30 years.

If you are applying for a Contributory Parent visa, please note that the second instalment fee of A$43,600 (Please refer to the updated fees from DHA when you’re applying ) is payable just before the visa is granted.
